World Leading Technologies
Through the STFC's role as a
stakeholder in Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus, the
Campus has access to 20 world leading and 70 world class
technologies.
World leading facilities and technologies include:
- Daresbury SIC has access to Superstem, the word's most
resolving electron microscope
- STFC is majority shareholder on behalf of the UK government in
Diamond - the world's latest X-ray source ( x10,000)
- ISIS - The World's most intense pulsed source of neutrons is
wholly owned by STFC
- SRS (Synchrotron Radiation Source ) - The world's first 2nd
generation synchrotron source is wholly owned by STFC
- STFC operates CLF (Central Laser Facility) - The world's
highest irradiance laser
- Daresbury SIC through STFC researchers inputs into CERN LHC
(Large Hadron Collider) - The world's highest data-rate
detector
- STFC operates the largest space department in Europe with
over160 orbiting instruments
World class facilities and technologies include:
- Operated by Daresbury Laboratory and University of Edinburgh,
HPCx is the first terascale research capability computing facility
in the UK. It is also the largest academic high end computing (HEC)
facility in Europe and the 2nd largest in the world.
- Daresbury SIC has world class accelerator science expertise and
is connected to the world's largest accelerator science
community. It also has world class expertise in designing and
making accelerators and in designing and making particle physics
detectors such as ATLAS and CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid).
- Daresbury SIC offers the best circular dichroism facility in
the world, enabling scientists to gather valuable information on
proteins in very small quantities and in solution.
Other world class facilities and technologies include:
- Computational Science - Daresbury SIC is home to the UK's
largest multidisciplinary Computer Science and Engineering group
with more than 100 people working in this division.
- Daresbury SIC has access to several thousand leading
computational scientists in the U.K. who are integrated into a
network of over 10,000 particle physicists globally. It
coordinates most of the UK's input into worldwide high energy
physics and particle physics.
- There are approximately 7,000 registered users of Daresbury
Laboratory facilities in the area of computer science and
engineering. There are over 14,000 registered users of all
Daresbury SIC facilities, and Daresbury SIC has links with every
research led university in the UK along with an extensive
international network.
As well as having world class facilities and technologies
