Science in Society
The Science and Society Programme at Daresbury Laboratory forms part of the Science & Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC’s) overall communications strategy, involving public engagement and public accountability. The STFC also works closely with external science centre and museum staff, and with other science communicators and writers, providing links to scientists and major projects.
The Science and Society Programme's role is to inform and inspire audiences by capitalising on the excitement of new developments and discoveries arising from research carried out at the major facilities, and also in current astronomy, space and particle physics programme areas. The STFC also aims to demonstrate the resulting benefits to the nation of the work arising, for example, through partnerships with high-tech UK industry. In delivering the Science and Society Programme, the STFC acts as a facilitating, funding, policy making and communications centre, working closely with scientists, the media, educators and communications professionals. One key target audience is 11-16 year olds, often reached through the education system, which we can uniquely support by providing links between cutting edge research and the curriculum.
The unique facilities at the STFC's laboratories provide a major resource for science and society activities. More than 5000 members of the public, and school students, currently visit the STFC each year. All are enthused by what they see and do.
