Automotive and Aerospace Engineering
Daresbury’s synchrotron and neutron sources can be applied to engineering imaging for a wide range of applications ranging from strain measurement to full meso-scale simulation of airflow on aircraft.
In materials science and tomography, the laboratory’s 3D x-ray provides cutting edge engineering design and prototyping capabilities. Whilst in surface science Daresbury also leads the way, utilising its synchrotron resource along with a host of other technologies including; neutrons, XPS, medium energy ion scattering (MEIS), atomic force microscopes, transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes and SuperSTEM (the world’s most resolving atomic resolution electron microscopes).
Large users of these facilities have included Airbus and Rolls Royce, with the aerospace sector’s keen focus on safety being paramount in the research. Indeed Rolls Royce has developed turbine blades with technology from the Daresbury Laboratory.
In the SME market, the technology offers the combination of world class scientific expertise with the hands-on technical support to turn innovative concepts into reality.
