Biomedical

The Northwest of England has a strong and rapidly growing healthcare industry, with around 230 companies established in the region. This is further supported by the strong academic research capabilities of the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester, partner hospitals and locally-based national support facilities such as the National Biomanufacturing Centre.

Daresbury Laboratory has for many years provided crucial platform analytical technology to support the healthcare industry, using its capability to evaluate a variety of protein structures, amongst other things, through internationally-leading processes. Protein crystallography analysis through the Synchrotron Radiation Source, the electron spectroscopy capabilities of NCESS (National Centre for Electron Spectroscopy and Surface Science ) and SuperSTEM (the world’s most resolving electron microscope) have all been utilised in evaluating protein structures.

Recently, this resource has been further complemented by the modelling and simulation capabilities of the Computational Science and Engineering Department.

It is this background which has led to Daresbury SIC becoming home to a cluster of nearly 10 healthcare businesses in a number of areas, including pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and medical devices.

The Daresbury SIC Biomedical brochure is available to download.
