Modeling & Simulation

The Computational Science & Engineering Department (CSED) at Daresbury SIC combines expertise in fluid flow modeling with the latest high-performance computing technology to enable the solution of complex fluid dynamic problems up to meso scale modeling.

The group has been collaborating with universities and industry for many years and specialises in high performance parallel computing, turbulence and combustion modeling, microfluidics and non-equilibrium gas dynamics.

As one of the world's leading players in the modeling and design of microfluidic devices, it deals with many exciting modeling challenges because, at such small scales, the fluid may not behave in the same way as experienced in the macroscopic world.

Daresbury SIC is home to the HPCx UK academic supercomputer; the next generation of which will be based at Edinburgh, with STFC being a key stakeholder.

However, with the planned installation of Blue Gene P, Daresbury SIC plans to enter the world’s top three supercomputing resources.
